從故事讀本中學英文

這學期在孩子學校作英語補救教學的志工，教小二英文。和孩子互動極有趣，可惜每週僅兩次，每次約35-40分鐘。
在 康軒 New Wow English B版 1 中每課有簡單的會話或句子(如：Hello, Amy. Who is it?  It's me)，另每單元複習約4個英文字母的相關字(word)(如：Aa--Apple, Bb--Book)。

我發覺孩子要認或記的單字不少，如Unit1有 "課程綱要的最基本1200個字詞"：hello, hi, is, it, me, who；需認識的字彙：Amy, come in, everyone, Harry, Ms. Young, Peter, please, Sandy, Tony ；字母相關字：apple, book, cat, dog 。

我試著用較多前後文脈絡來帶領學習字彙，一方面感覺單字(word)不是孤立的、需要死記的，另方面以故事來增加孩子的好奇及學習的趣味性。

在圖書館發現一本  The Good Bad Cat (一隻好的"壞"貓) @-@，故事很簡單，其中也安排了重覆的字與詞以利孩子記憶。書中的"給父母的註解"提到：

Parent Note
Much of beginning reading is memorization of words and short sentences. In order to read successfuly, children need to
~ master a basic vocabulary of sight words[註],
~ learn to sound out words, and
~ learn to use context clues in illustrations and text for meaning

School Zones's Start to Read! series helps children learn to read by presenting interesting stories with easy vocabularies. Words are repeated. Sentences are short. Rhyming words help children increase their vocabulary. Meaning clues in the illustrations are abundant.

我想孩子對"cat"這字會更有興趣吧！



[註]sight words(初階閱讀關鍵字):

Sight words 就是兒童閱讀初階的常用字，共有220個字，是由美國學者E.W. Dolch 在二次世界大戰之前，針對英語兒童讀物經過分析統計後所彙整出最常被使用的220個字，分成五個 Levels所以被稱為 Dolch sight words。另外 Dolch亦列出童書中最常出現的95個名詞 Dolch nouns搭配Sight words 學習，對初階美語學習者是不可缺的基礎。

為什麼在孩子初學英語進入閱讀階段，需要特別教 Sight words呢？ 如果孩子在閱讀單句前，在十個字中已能讀出七中的七、八個字，其餘的再利用 Phonics 拼讀法試著讀出，再結合讀本中提供的圖片以及前後文做文意之猜測與理解，那基本上孩子就踏出英語閱讀的第一步了。

Sight words 在孩子早期閱讀的書本中佔了60% ~ 85%，也就是說在指導孩子閱讀之前，若能先帶 Sight words 當能再英語教學過程中給予莫大的幫助。(楊耀錡老師, http://www2.tn.edu.tw/english/ABCF/%E9%9B%BB%E5%AD%90%E5%A0%B13.doc)
